Our Philosophy: Wholistic Healing
In an Indigenous worldview, Wholistic health is critical to well-being. The child in the centre of the medicine wheel has multiple “selves” that need to be balanced for a positive, healthy lifestyle.
“Aboriginal teachings encompass a totality of the human condition – physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional – and the significance of balance is emphasized. All aspects of life are intricately interconnected. Relationships are fundamental to understanding the nature of events, and establishing standards of behavior. Separating things out from each other and studying them as singular entities without a Wholistic viewpoint as an organizing point does not fall within the natural way of thinking in Aboriginal epistemology.”

As shown in the figure, the four elements of a child exist in the centre of all their supports. Each of the elements in the circle of support surrounding the child interact with that child and influence their well-being. The activities and programs Fort Albany First Nation would like to deliver will intervene at each level of this circle.

Purpose
The overall objective of this 3-year project is to restore balance for children and youth in Fort Albany through holistic healing. These services and supports aim to promote mental, emotional, behavioural, and spiritual well-being of children, youth, and the community, as well as build capacity within the community’s existing services and supports.
The programs and services that have been held aimed to promote a sense of hope, purpose, meaning, and belonging, which are integral ways of promoting life and preventing suicide, particularly as Fort Albany began the process of research into the recent discovery of unmarked gravesites at St. Anne’s residential school.
The primary tasks of these programs and services are the creation of a variety of suicide prevention and intervention-focused services and supports in the community.
