About
The Choose Life Team develops and delivers a variety of programs and activities that aim to positively impact children/youth. Activities are often facilitated by local staff and/or community members and engage youth in healthy activities. Types of activities include:
Prevention and Wellness Promotion Activities
Programs and activities target: suicide prevention and awareness among youth, antibullying programming, life skills education, education about substance use, LGBTQ2S+ programming, health promotion education, etc. Prevention and Wellness Promotion activities may include:
- Gookum Kitchen
- Mental Health in a Workplace Training
- SafeTALK Suicide Intervention Training
- Big Sister/Big Brother Program

Implementation of Land-based Activities
Land-based activities are facilitated jointly by local staff, Elders, Traditional Counsellors and Healers, and clinical staff. Land-based activities are based on all seasons and may include:
- Berry picking and other food harvesting
- Medicine picking
- Fishing (both winter and summer)
- Seasonal hunting
- Camping
- Canoe trips
- Winter activities (snowshoe, skating, sliding, natural walks, sculptures, etc.)
- Natural walks and hiking
- Teachings (trees/plants, water, animals, rivers/lakes)
Recreation
Recreation activities engage children and youth in a positive, healthy lifestyle, and impact the child’s natural support system. Activities are often family-focused and can include life skill development.
Recreation activities are based on all seasons and may include:
- Hockey tournaments
- Volleyball tournaments
- Seasonal activities such as Christmas events
- After-school programming
- Community events
- Art and music activities
While most activities are planned ahead of time on a yearly basis, there is also some room for the Choose Life team to accept proposals from community members wishing to run activities throughout the year.
